| Baseboard | A pallet board on the bottom of a pallet. |
| Batten | Alternative term for either bearer or stringer. |
| Batten | Term used to describe vertical components on container sides to which horizontal components are nailed. |
| Bearer | The component used to facilitate two way entry handling of timber containers. |
| Bearer | The component used in two-way entry pallets to which top and baseboards are nailed. |
| Block | Component used in four-way entry base construction. |
| Block | Component used in four-way pallets and attached to deck assembly and baseboards. |
| Bottom Deck | Term describing construction of the base of the pallet. |
| BREPAL | The UK administrative body responsible for Euro-Pallets |
| Bridge | Internal structure within the container that supports product and enhances rigidity. |
| BS | British Standard as issued by the British Standards Institute. |
| BS 1133 | The British Standard to which cases and crates should be manufactured. |

| Butt-joint | Definition of two baords nailed to another component without space between or in tandem. |
| Cantilever | Where a wing or overhang is created by the inset of block components down the length of the stringer - specific to four way entry pallets. |
| Case | A timber container constructed with close boarded faces. |

| Chamfer | Planed section of a component - usually to ease handling and reduce damage. |
| CHEP | Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool |
| Chep | A pallet pool operating in a number of countries. |
| Clench | Type of nailing process used in the manufacture of deck assemblies - specific to four way entry pallets. |
| Clench Nailing | Type of nailing process used in the manufacture of panel assemblies for cases and/or crates. |
| Close boarded | Face(s) of a case that is constructed without spaces or gaps. |
| Closeboarded | A pallet with one or more decks that are constructed without spaces. |
| Coach Bolt/Screw | A heavy duty fixing that can be removed and replaced as required. |
| Collar | A portable timber sleeve that is located around the outer perimeter of the pallet deck - usually constructed with hinges at each corner. |
| CP | A range of exchangeable pallets designed for use in the chemical and plastic markets. |
| CPC | Canadian Pallet Council. |
| CPI | Chemcial Pressure Impregnation |
| Crate | A timber container constructed with one or more open boarded faces. |
| Cruciform | Special baseboard construction on four way pallets to aid roller conveyor handling and increase durability. |
| Deck | Sub assembly comprising of top boards and stringers for a four way entry pallet. |
| Dessicant | Material used within case to absorb moisture and inhibit rust. |

| Double Tongue | A hinge for a pallet collar designed to allow location of the collar to both a base and upper pallet (block-stacking). |
| Double Wall | Heavy duty cardboard/Fibreboard sheet used to construct carton that is fixed to a pallet base - providing alternative to timber case (see Tri-Wall). |
| Dunnage | A loose piece of timber positioned under a unit load to aid fork truck access. |
| Dusseldorfer | German pallet of 800 x 600mm dimensions using metal block components - primarily for FMCG markets. |
| EPAL | The major European body administering the 1200 x 800mm Euro-Pallet pool in most european countries. |
| Euro-Pallet | A specific design of four way entry pallet of 1200 x 800mm standard specification in europe (UIC435-2). |
| FEFPEB | The European Trade Association for manufacturers of timber packaging. |
| Fillet | Infill component used on base of two way pallets. |
| Fumigation | Process of gas treatment used to ensure short-term pest control of timber. |
| GMA | Term associated with main specification of pallet used in the USA, also known as 50 x 48 inch partial four way. |
| HGS | Home grown softwood. |

| HT | Heat Treatment |
| Inset | Term describing a wing or overhanging component. |
| IPPC | International Plant Protection Convention |
| ISO | International Standards Organisation. |
| KD | Kiln dried. |
| KD Form | Definition of a case or crate which has all faces assembled, but finally constructed into the "finished article" elsewhere - normally adopted where placement of the product within the timber container is easier without the sides of the unit being in-situ eg: on site export packing. |
| KD Form | Knock down form pallets - specific to export markets where shipment costs prohibit stock being manufactured other than at destination. |
| Kraft Bitumen | Lining material for cases, designed to prevent metal oxidisation. |
| Lining | Internal covering to container to provide additional protection for product. |
| LPR | A pallet pool operating in Europe and based in France. |
| MC | Moisture content. |
| Membrane | Term used to describe lining of case - usually associated with plastic or foil waterproof layers. |
| Methyl Bromide | Gas used in fumigation process (Mb) |
| Mibant | Nail strength test method - USA origin. |
| Mitre | Term describing a cut component usually 45 degrees or a pallet corner. |
| NAPD | National Association of Pallet Distributors. |
| Notch | Portion of bearer component removed from side of two way pallet to allow access for fork-truck. |
| Open boarded | To construct a face or base with spaces or gaps between components. |
| Partial Four Way | Term descibing a notched bearer pallet. |
| Petachloraphenate | Timber treatment widely used until 1990 to prevent bacteria growth in unseasoned timber (also known as PCP) |

| Stringer | The component used to fasten top boards to the construction of a four way entry pallet deck. In USA this term refers to the UK equivalent bearer. |
| Sulfuryl Fluoride | Gas used in fumigation process |
| Support Frame | An internal structure within a timber container, that provides additional support |

| Tanalith | A long term chemical pressure treatment designed to control plant pests within timber and prevent re-infestation (tanalisation) |
| Tar Paper | Lining material for the internal of a case, designed to be a rust inhibitor.

| Timcon | The UK Timber Packaging and Pallet Confederation. |
| Tongue and Groove | Timber which is machined to enable components to be joined and flush fitting prior to a subsequent nailing process. |
| Top Deck | The description of the upper most components of a normal pallet's construction. |
| UK Chep Pallet | The specification of the 1200 x 1000mm pallet used in the UK Chep pool. |
| Wing | An overhang of a topdeck or baseboard in relation to its location to the component it is nailed to. |
